2011 Year in Review

It has been a great year for Dim thanks to all of our wonderful supports and the great city we live in. We helped raise over $3000 for charity, were featured in the city pages twice, had our 2 biggest shows to date, were featured in a documentary that made the festival circuit, and made a ton of new work! Red Hot Art Festival -August

We had a both agin for the 4th year in a row for the Red Hot Art festival at Stevens Square Park. We were blessed again for the second year in a row with gorgeous weather – albeit a bit hot. We primarily sold wallpaper prints this year around and they were well received, which was awesome.

Zine Fest – September 24th

We tabled at our second ‘zine fest. This time around we plugged the Magic 15 book we made last year with our intern Dan. It was a bit of a collaborative visual story telling experiment. We also ate burritos.

T&G is moved into their new space in NE MPLS and Dim Media is invading with their latest series – “DISOBEY”.

About the show:
“DISOBEY” is Dim Media’s homage to and critique of the legacy of street art and graffiti. One part experiment, another part parody, “DISOBEY” explores the movement that the art world is still reluctant to accept as “high art”. The artwork, created from 100% up-cycled materials includes salvaged wallpaper, decaying fencing, and bricks from a demolished building. Dim Media explores new territory using the aesthetics of up-cycled materials and a pantheon of street art styles.

Dim Media will be live painting at the annual Wildcat Sanctuary Fundraiser. This year’s theme: “The Roaring 20s”. Pick up your tickets now and come watch Dim paint live.

The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) will celebrate the 8th Annual Jungle Boogie – Roaring 20′s, a fundraising speakeasy to benefit TWS, on Sunday, October 9, 2011, from 4:30-10 pm at the Minneapolis Marriott West. Put on your zoot suit, flapper dress or best black and white, jump in your Model-T and get ready for a roaring good time! Join us for the cocktail hour and jazz as you discover the many treasures in our annual Jungle Boogie Silent Auction.

No prohibition this evening so pick up your TWS Serval White, the 5th in the series of Vintage Wildcat Wine, at our Gift Bazaar. Don’t miss our Feed-a-Feline wall or bidding on an Art Deco piece and many other items at Live Auction during dinner presentation. The evening wouldn’t be complete without the Fred Astaire dancers teaching how to dance the Charleston along with some jazzy music.

About Red Hot
The city’s premier grass roots arts festival, Red Hot Art is a weekend long event that serves as a showcase for emerging Twin Cities artists, offering them and arts enthusiasts alike a great opportunity to create flourishing relationships through support and networking. The event, free and open to the public, also provides a way to reclaim the park for neighborhood residents and local families. Our mission is to celebrate the artistic diversity and urban vibrancy of Minneapolis in the historic Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood. Each Summer, Red Hot provides an ideal opportunity for artists of all mediums to showcase their work, and brings together 3,500 community participants. Dim presents “Birthmarks” at Hopkins Art Center – June/July 2011

Dim Media is presenting “Birthmarks” at the Hopkins Art Center through the month of June. We’ll be unveiling the latest addition to the series : ten never before seen paintings as well as the original 10 pieces. Birthmarks will be displayed along with 5 amazing female potters. The opening is Thursday June 2nd, 6-8pm.

“Birthmarks” is Dim Media’s premier abstract series. Moving against
their popular stylized aethestic, here Dim ventures into the textures,
palletes, and patterns of naturally occurring, abstract imagery.

The process for creating “Birthmarks” was an aggressive
collaboration of all four Dim artists simultaneously working on
each painting over the period of a year. Each brush stroke brought
both alteration and integration from canvas to canvas, creating an
ambiguity between the individuals’ marks and the collective. This
procsess makes these works truly unqiue and impossible to recreate.

Live Painting at Big Brothers/Sisters 13th Annual Gala

Dim Media will be painting live at the 13th Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Fundraiser Gala. This years event is titled “Safari on the Serengeti”. As such, Dim will be creating three brand new “Safari” themed pieces that will be auctioned off at the end of the night to raise money for the organization. We’ll also be donating some one-on-one art instruction time as an additional auction item. Dim is excited to be a part of this high-profile event and to help raise money for a very worthy cause.

You’re invited to join us for an enchanted evening on the Serengeti. From 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., enjoy a wine reception while bidding on a ballroom full of fabulous silent auction items. A special dinner, program and live auction take place between 7:30 and 9:00 p.m., and auction check-out and dancing carry on until 11 p.m.

The night includes electrifying performances by the Tiyumba Dance Company and the swinging sounds of the Sevilles, all emceed by anchors from a local news affiliate.

Megan Newquist is an anchor and reporter for 5 Eyewitness News and Channel 45. Her career has taken her from California to Kentucky to Minnesota, where she’s called the Twin Cities home since 2009. Megan’s heart for young people keeps her volunteering weekly at Shriners Hospital for Children, and she has hosted the MDA Telethon for the last seven years.

Gus Rosendal wanted to be a broadcaster since he was six years old when he made his microphone out of Legos. Over the years, the equipment has gone more ‘high tech,’ but his passion for the job remains the same. Gus joined 5 Eyewitness News and Channel 45 as an anchor and reporter in December 2010 after working with stations out East. He has been honored by the Associated Press for his breaking news and reporting skills.

Free All Over the Walls Screener Premier @ MSPIFF – April 18th

The documentary “All Over the Walls”, which includes Dim Media, is showcasing at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film festival. The free showing is a “in progress” screening, the first for the festival. It is at the historic St. Anthony Main Theater at 6:30 PM. Tickets ARE free, but you must pick them up at the theater box office the day of the show – first come first serve.

From the MPR Article – Pumping up the Minnesota in MSPIFF:

“This year we created for the first time ever a ‘work in progress screening,’” Gilbert says. “That film is called ‘All over the Walls.’ Basically it’s a documentary that follows a mixed media artist and body painter named Jacob as he pursues his dream of building an art gallery.” It will be a free screening where people can come and help the film makers by giving them feedback about their rough cut. “It kind of opens up the process to people who don’t normally get to see that.”

The doc features Jacob Alexander, Grandmother Grant, Jobot, Oni Sakti, Dim Media, Laura Faulk, Albert Elmore, and more. More info on the doc itself soon.
